"Hallelujah" is a song written by Canadian vocaliser Leonard Cohen, originally released on his anthology Diverse Positions (1984). Achieving little initial success,[1] the vocal found greater popular acclamation through a recording by John Cale, which inspired a recording by Jeff Buckley.

Following its increased popularity later on being featured in the film Shrek (2001),[3] [4] many other arrangements have been performed in recordings and in concert, with over 300 versions known.[5] The song has been used in movie and television soundtracks and televised talent contests. "Hallelujah" experienced renewed interest post-obit Cohen's death in Nov 2016 and appeared on many international singles charts, including entering the American Billboard Hot 100 for the showtime fourth dimension.[6]

Musical limerick and lyrical interpretation [edit]

"Hallelujah", in its original version, is in 12
8
time, which evokes both early rock and whorl and gospel music. Written in the primal of C major, the chord progression matches lyrics from the song: "goes similar this, the fourth, the fifth, the pocket-sized autumn, the major lift": C, F, G, A minor, F.[7]

Cohen wrote effectually 80 draft verses for "Hallelujah", with one writing session at the Royalton Hotel in New York where he was reduced to sitting on the floor in his underwear, banging his head on the floor.[eight] His original version, every bit recorded on his album Various Positions, contains several biblical references, most notably evoking the stories of Samson and Delilah from the Volume of Judges ("she cut your hair") also every bit King David and Bathsheba ("you saw her bathing on the roof, her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you").[7] [9]

Post-obit his original 1984 studio-album version, Cohen performed the original song on his world bout in 1985, but live performances during his 1988 and 1993 tours nearly invariably contained a quite dissimilar set up of lyrics. Numerous singers mix lyrics from both versions, and occasionally brand direct lyric changes; for example, in place of Cohen's "holy dove", Canadian-American singer Rufus Wainwright substituted "holy dark", while Canadian singer-songwriter Allison Crowe sang "holy ghost".

Cohen's lyrical poetry and his view that "many dissimilar hallelujahs exist" is reflected in wide-ranging covers with very unlike intents or tones, allowing the song to be "melancholic, fragile, uplifting [or] joyous" depending on the performer:[7] The Welsh vocalizer-songwriter John Cale, the first person to record a encompass version of the song (in 1991), promoted a bulletin of "soberness and sincerity" in contrast to Cohen's dispassionate tone;[7] the cover past Jeff Buckley, an American singer-songwriter, is more sorrowful and was described by Buckley as "a hallelujah to the orgasm";[7] [10] Crowe interpreted the song as a "very sexual" limerick that discussed relationships;[vii] Wainwright offered a "purifying and almost liturgical" estimation;[vii] and Guy Garvey of the British ring Elbow made the hallelujah a "stately creature" and incorporated his religious estimation of the vocal into his band's recordings.[vii]

Canadian singer k.d. lang said in an interview presently after Cohen'southward expiry that she considered the song to be about "the struggle between having man desire and searching for spiritual wisdom. It'due south being caught betwixt those 2 places."[eleven] Onetime Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page, who sang the song at Canadian pol Jack Layton's funeral, described the song equally being "about disappointing [other] people".[12]

I was just reading a review of a movie called Watchmen that uses it and the reviewer said – "Can we delight have a moratorium on 'Hallelujah' in movies and television shows?" And I kind of feel the same style ... I call back information technology'southward a skillful song, but I think too many people sing information technology.[34] [35]

Conversely, in early 2012, while promoting his then-electric current album, Former Ideas, Cohen stated he was not tired of the song being covered:

In that location's been a couple of times when other people have said can nosotros accept a moratorium please on "Hallelujah"? Must nosotros accept it at the end of every single drama and every single Idol? And once or twice I've felt maybe I should lend my voice to silencing it only on second thought no, I'chiliad very happy that it's beingness sung.[36]
